A Thanksgiving word game with three manageable rounds

This Thanksgiving category game gives players twelve everyday categories and three starting letters: P, S, and C. Instead of searching for hidden words or recalling trivia facts, you invent an answer that fits both the category and the letter. The seasonal setting leaves room for different foods, homes, and traditions. You do not need a commercial board game, letter die, or specialist vocabulary. Play one letter during a short wait before dinner, or use all three after the table is cleared. The challenge comes from finding a suitable idea, not from knowing a single answer the host has chosen.

What the printable includes

The two-page pack provides a category worksheet with twelve rows and answer columns labeled P, S, and C, followed by a rules and hosting page. That gives each player 36 possible answer spaces across three rounds. A4 and US Letter versions contain identical categories. Print one worksheet per player or pair, and keep one copy of the guide on the table. Supply pencils, a timer, and scrap paper if anyone prefers larger writing space. There is no fixed answer key because multiple responses can be valid. The guide supports the game; it does not replace the group agreeing on its scoring rules before starting.

Prepare a round and explain an example

Read all twelve category labels aloud first so everyone can ask questions before the timer runs. Begin with P and give players four minutes to fill only that column. A valid answer begins with P and belongs in the stated category. For example, "pitcher" fits a useful kitchen object, while "peaceful" could describe a cozy room. Agree that the first meaningful word determines the starting letter: adding "pretty" to any object just to obtain P does not count. Articles such as a, an, and the do not supply the letter. Players may leave a difficult row blank and return to it later.

Score suitable answers before originality

Use the relaxed scoring mode for a mixed-age table: each valid answer earns one point, even when another player wrote the same word. Each letter round therefore has a maximum of twelve points. If everyone wants more competition, agree before the first round that matching valid answers score zero and a unique valid answer scores one. Apply the same mode to everyone for the full game. Compare answers row by row, not all at once. Ask a player to explain an unusual connection briefly, and accept a reasonable interpretation rather than turning the review into a debate about taste or family customs.

Prevent avoidable disputes and finish fairly

Use a word only once within the same letter column, even if it might fit two categories. A phrase counts as one answer, and ordinary plural forms are treated as the same answer when comparing duplicates. Do not award extra points for adding descriptive words. Decide beforehand whether proper names are allowed; excluding them keeps this pack focused on everyday vocabulary. After P, play S and then C with the same time limit and scoring mode. Everyone receives the same three rounds. Add the totals and share ties, rather than inventing a harder final letter that changes the challenge after the game has finished.

Make the worksheet work for your group

For younger children, use pairs with an adult reader and give six minutes per column instead of four. Allow spoken answers to a scribe when handwriting is uncomfortable, and do not treat spelling errors as wrong if the intended word is clear and begins with the correct sound and letter. A group using more than one language can agree on one language for scored rounds or play cooperatively across languages without comparing points. Nobody must disclose a deeply personal answer in the thankful category; an everyday comfort is sufficient. Guests can also play without a timer and help each other fill the sheet.

Printing and choosing a different kind of puzzle

Select actual size or 100 percent when printing, then check that the answer columns have clear edges and enough writing room. Avoid printing two PDF pages onto one sheet, which makes the answer boxes too small. The guide can stay with the host while players use their worksheets. After all three letters, invite people to share a particularly inventive answer before collecting papers. For a puzzle with fixed solutions, choose the Thanksgiving word scramble. If the group wants conversation rather than points, the Thanksgiving conversation cards let guests discuss their own experiences without a letter restriction.
